What to Expect from Prostate Cancer Screening?

With Father’s Day approaching, many of us are wondering what to get dad to show our love and appreciation.

A great gift to consider, that could be life-saving is setting up and if possible going with your dad to get a prostate screening test.

When detected early prostate cancer is one of the easiest cancers to cure.

Who Should Get Prostate Cancer Screenings?

Men should have a baseline screening at age 50 and earlier if Prostate Cancer runs in the family.

Your current health, medical history, as well as the results of your screening test, all provide information that will determine how often you will need to schedule future screenings.

There are a few ways to screen for prostate cancer:

A Digital Rectal Exam (DRE):

Your doctor manually examines the inside of your rectum to check the prostate for swelling, hardness, or small bumps.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test:

It’s a blood test that checks for levels of a certain protein that is produced by prostate cells, known as PSA. High levels of PSA in the blood do not necessarily mean prostate cancer is present, but your doctor may want to perform more frequent screenings if the level is elevated.

4K Score Test:

A blood test that determines a patient’s risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. This can reduce the need for biopsies and help with treatment decisions. However, be careful. Many prostate cancers thought not to be aggressive, turn out to be after all and by then it may be too late and may require more extensive and invasive treatments.

Genetic testing:

It is available to help determine your risk of developing prostate cancer but not a guarantee.

What if I’m Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer?

It’s important to do your research to determine which treatment option is best for you. As always go with a noninvasive cancer treatment if possible, such as radiation therapy.

CyberKnife: Innovative Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer

CyberKnife Radiation Therapy was FDA approved in 2001. Since then thousands of patients have been successfully treated worldwide. For prostate cancer detected early it has a 97% cure rate.

The CyberKnife system targets tumors and lesions within the body with pinpoint accuracy, while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unaffected.

The treatment requires no incisions or anesthesia and result in little pain if any and little or no recovery time. While standard radiation therapy requires 42 or more sessions, CyberKnife treats prostate cancer in only 5 sessions. At the CyberKnife Center of Miami, we have successfully treated thousands of prostate cancer patients since 2003.

Long term studies reveal that 98% of patients remained cancer-free for 10 years or more.

Treatments are minimally harmful, producing low levels of toxicity. Plus, CyberKnife is covered by the vast majority of insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid. The team at the CyberKnife Center of Miami is the most experienced in South Florida.

They are compassionate and care about you and your family. We hold your hand throughout the entire treatment process and beyond.
