What Are the Warning Signs of Prostate Cancer?

by | Feb 13, 2021 | CyberKnife For Prostate Cancer, Prostate Cancer

One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. While that is a staggering statistic, there is some good news. Most men who are diagnosed will survive. That is typical because most of the time, prostate cancer is found early through regular screenings, physical exams, blood tests and because doctors now have better and more effective treatments due to medical advances. Prostate cancer in the early stages may not show any symptoms. That is why regular screening is vital. However, there are warning signs of prostate cancer in more advanced cases.

According to the American Cancer Society, those prostate cancer symptoms include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • More urgency to urinate, especially at night.
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Weakness in the leg or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control if the cancer is pressing on the spine.
  • Pain in the hip, back, chest or other areas if the cancer has metastasized.

These warning signs of prostate cancer can mean it has developed to a more serious stage. However, these same symptoms can be caused by other medical conditions as well, which oftentimes are less serious.

That is why any time you notice any change in urinary symptoms or if you think there is something wrong, it is important to go to your doctor right away for an exam. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, doctors use chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and hormone therapy to treat prostate cancer. Sometimes they use a combination of treatments too. That all depends on the type and stage of the cancer.

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer and your doctors recommend radiation as part of your treatment plan, it is important to know you have options other than just traditional radiation. That is where the experts at the CyberKnife Center of Miami can help.

CyberKnife for Prostate Cancer

CyberKnife — a form of pinpointed radiation therapy — may be right for you.

CyberKnife is not a knife at all. It is cutting-edge radiation technology also known as stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT. It can destroy prostate tumors with precision leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed.

Since the prostate is close to several vital organs, the traditional treatment for prostate cancer can be life-altering. It can interfere with urinary, bowel and sexual function. With CyberKnife, there are minimal side-effects, if any. They can include urinary and rectal irritation and fatigue.  Medication can help minimize these, and they usually go away in a few days or weeks.

There is also a lower risk of toxicity with CyberKnife than with traditional radiation.

Clinical experience shows most patients do well with CyberKnife treatment, with cure rates of more than 98% for more than a decade.

Plus, CyberKnife only requires 5 radiation treatment sessions compared to 42 with other types of radiation!
