I’m having more fun than ever,” says Don Kearns as he steers his boat on the open waters of South Florida with the wind rustling as he speaks. He’s one of many patients that experienced the benefits of radiation therapy for prostate cancer treatment firsthand.

Kearns is a prostate cancer survivor who sought treatment from the CyberKnife Center of Miami three years ago.

“It’s about three years since I completed CyberKnife Center of Miami’s just phenomenal non-invasive treatment that left me with zero side effects, allowing me to live my life normally and beyond normally,” Kearns says.

And he’s not alone, CyberKnife Miami constantly hears from patients who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer about how they’re able to live normal, active lives once treatment ends.

“CyberKnife is an amazingly precise way to deliver radiation therapy to the prostate. It’s only five treatments over 10 days as opposed to approximately 42 treatments with standard radiation therapy,” Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director of CyberKnife Center of Miami, says in an interview.

While the treatment may not be available everywhere, Dr. Pomper says South Florida is lucky.

“Miami is blessed that we have the CyberKnife Center of Miami,” he says, of the center that opened in 2003.

The cure rate for CyberKnife Miami is 97-percent for prostate cancer, and patients, like Kearns, go back to living their normal lives.

Radiation Therapy For Prostate Cancer

CyberKnife Miami is a free-standing outpatient cancer treatment center that uses state-of-the-art image-guided radiosurgery treatments called stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT for prostate cancer.

SBRT can kill prostate tumors with precision while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue alone with fewer treatments, fewer side effects and less downtime.

Typical side effects with CyberKnife can include fatigue, urinary irritation and rectal irritation. Medication can help minimize these, and they usually go away in a few weeks.

With CyberKnife, there is no cutting, incision, blood, anesthesia or pain.  Plus, there is little or no recovery time.

Here Dr. Pomper talks about the treatment plan for prostate cancer with CyberKnife.

Keep in mind, the radiation from Cyberknife stays focused on the tumor with less risk of burning healthy tissue like the anus or testicles. There is also a reduced risk of impotence and urinary incontinence, which can be complications of prostate cancer surgery. And sexual function remains the same for most patients after CyberKnife treatment. That’s always important for our patients to know.

There is also a lower risk of toxicity than with traditional radiation.
