Hello Gentlemen!

You’ve reached a milestone – the big 5-0! Congratulations, it’s a great place to be and a great time to remember what’s most important. If you can’t take care of yourself, you certainly cannot take care of the ones you love.

You can understand that right? So, what do you need to do?

Here are five simple ideas to incorporate into your life compiled by the experts at CyberKnife Center of Miami, a state-of-the-art radiation treatment center in South Florida dedicated to helping guide South Floridians through cancer treatments and so much more.

Do you have to do all of these things all right away? No! You’re a man of 50, and you’re set in your ways. We know change takes time.

Take small steps, and they will make a huge difference.

Get Moving with Exercise

You know the drill here. You have to keep active to be healthy. That doesn’t mean you need to run an Ironman race. Just get out and walk, ride a bike or go for a swim. Keeping your body moving keeps your mind and your body strong. It lowers stress, and it just plain feels good.

Watch Your Weight with Diet and Nutrition

According to WebMD, men around 50 start to gain weight around the middle, or the spare tire area. That can be a predictor of diabetes or heart disease.  That means in addition to exercise, you also have to eat right.

Get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid processed, fatty and salty foods. And limit sweets.

Can you splurge once in a while? Absolutely, who doesn’t love a bacon double cheeseburger with fries and a chocolate milkshake? But that shouldn’t be an everyday meal. Be smart.

Also, remember to limit your alcohol intake and don’t smoke!

Rest and Relaxation are Vital

Take time for yourself. The world can wait. “Me time” is not selfish. You need your own time and space so you can be a better father, husband, sibling, son, co-worker or boss. So, take that time.

Also, remember you need your sleep to function, rebuild and regenerate. So be sure to get eight hours of good sleep on a consistent basis.

Family Medical History Review

This is a big one. Seriously.

You need to know your family medical history because it may impact you. If your father had colon or prostate cancer. You should make sure you’re screened or tested. If heart disease runs in your family, get a baseline heart exam. Likewise, for cholesterol, high blood pressure, autoimmune disorders and the list goes on. Also, stay current on your vaccinations.

Have an honest conversation with your doctor about how your past and your family’s past can dictate your future.

Health and Cancer Screenings

That leads us here to health and cancer screenings. An annual exam after the age of 50 is a must-do. No more excuses. Remember, you want to be here for the ones you love.

Get your cholesterol checked and blood pressure checked, get a colon cancer screening and get a prostate exam.

The earlier you start, the easier it is to take preventative measures if a problem arises. And if there’s a problem, you’d rather find it sooner instead of later.

Prostate Cancer Screening

Speaking of prostate screening, you should know that prostate cancer can be found early because of testing and examinations.

Testing includes a simple blood test looking for what’s called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.

Another test is the digital rectal exam. For this test, your doctor actually does an internal exam to feel the prostate. It might not be a fun test, but it could be a lifesaver. If your doctor detects anything that’s not right, he may send you for further testing like a biopsy.

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Know you have treatment options.

Doctors use chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and hormone therapy to treat the disease, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Sometimes they even combine therapies. It all depends on the type and stage of the cancer. You should talk to your doctor, and it’s always good to get a second opinion.

Prostate Cancer Treatment In Miami

The CyberKnife Center of Miami can help you with that. We want patients to know about their treatment choices. We know prostate cancer is a frightening diagnosis. But the treatment doesn’t have to be.

CyberKnife Miami is the region’s expert in Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), a type of radiation used for prostate cancer.

This therapy is non-invasive and uses high-tech, image-guided techniques to deliver radiation to a very precise area where the cancer is. It can kill prostate tumors with precision while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed with fewer treatments, fewer side effects and less downtime.

With CyberKnife treatments, there is a lower incidence of sexual, urinary and bowel function side effects. And patients continue normal activities during treatment.

CyberKnife Miami has treated thousands of prostate cancer patients in the Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties with excellent results.
