Beyond Borders: Global Perspectives on Cyberknife Therapy

by | Sep 15, 2023 | CyberKnife Treatment, Prostate Cancer

The experts at the CyberKnife Center of Miami – a premier cancer treatment center in South Florida – know how fortunate they are to have state-of-the-art equipment to treat prostate cancer patients.  And so do the many patients we have treated from South Florida, around the country and around the globe.

Yet many patients aren’t lucky enough to have a team of experts or a highly experienced prostate cancer treatment center like CyberKnife Miami close to home.

In fact, there are only 150 CyberKnife systems in cancer centers worldwide.

And while that number is increasing quickly, globally, and even across the United States, many patients are still limited to surgery and other more traditional cancer treatments including older types of radiation when it comes to prostate cancer treatment.

  • It would behoove those patients to do their own research and find out what other treatment options are available to them, and how CyberKnife has some distinct advantages to other modalities.
  • It can destroy prostate tumors while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue alone.
  • It’s noninvasive.
  • There is no anesthesia or cutting.
  • Clinical experience shows most patients do well with CyberKnife treatment, with cure rates of 98% for more than a decade.
  • It doesn’t come with the risks of surgery like infection and long periods of downtime.
  • CyberKnife’s treatments can be done in five therapy sessions over 10 days instead of 42 over three months with other types of radiation treatments.
  • The CyberKnife radiation beams, which target and destroy the tumor, are exceedingly precise.
  • There is less risk of side effects including impotence and incontinence.

“CyberKnife has few side effects. Its pinpoint radiation beams target only the prostate, so we can give a much higher dose with a lot fewer treatments, leaving healthy surrounding tissue unharmed. There is over 20 years of published studies to support its safety and effectiveness,” says Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director of CyberKnife Miami.

CyberKnife Miami Providing Prostate Cancer Treatment to International Patients

That’s why patients nationwide and even international patients, like Howard, turn to us.

“I was convinced this is where I needed to go for my treatment,” he says.

Howard lives in Trinidad where most treatments include surgery or traditional radiation. There are no CyberKnife centers near him. Howard says when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer he searched for another option on the internet and found CyberKnife Miami.

“When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I thought my world was coming to an end. I spoke with many men about their prostate cancer treatments, and 95% told me that they had bad experiences with open surgery (prostatectomy) or standard radiation and many felt very sick from their treatments,” says Howard who was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago.

One month later he was in South Florida beginning CyberKnife treatment under the care of Dr. Pomper.

“A lot of medical or cancer centers that have CyberKnife technology don’t have as much experience as we have using it. So, they get scared when they see a big tumor and think it is not worth treating or are worried about complications. Other doctors feel if it’s incurable why be aggressive?” explains Dr. Pomper.

“We feel the opposite. We feel, why not give it try, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. This is what we do all day, every day. Because of our many years of working with CyberKnife technology, we know what can and cannot be done,” he continues.

Howard says he chose CyberKnife Miami because of our decades of experience and our commitment to patient experience.

“Howard was an excellent candidate for CyberKnife,” says Dr. Pomper. “He was in good health and while his PSA levels continued to rise, his MRI and bone scan showed that the tumor was localized to his prostate. So, we weren’t worried that the cancer had spread to other areas. The procedure went very smoothly, and he tolerated it well enough that he was able to go about his life and enjoy Miami while he was in our city being treated.”
