Alan is no stranger to finishing first when it comes to running races, but he didn’t realize how important the sport was to him until he saw how quickly it could all be taken away.
The 76 old grandfather says he feels like a little kid every time he laces up his sneakers to run a race, competing in 10 and 15 mile Ks a year, winning his age group several times.
But in 2016 he came across a challenge that not only threatened to end his running days, but his life.
“I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I was stunned because the options are pretty scary.”
Like many men today, Alan chose CyberKnife radiation therapy to treat it.
He says, “There were 257 beams hitting the tumor while I way lying on the treatment table. I had five CyberKnife treatments, one each day, and in five days it was all over and I had no side effects.”
Following treatment, Alan wasted no time hitting the pavement with a goal of crossing the finish line again.
“It just felt like a million dollars to me to get out there and race and I won too so I was like, yes, I still got it.”
You can even argue, Alan’s gotten faster with age. He finished 3rd in his age group at the Florida Senior Games, which means he qualified to compete in the nationals.
He hopes to inspire others.
“Five years later and I’m still cancer free. Do what makes you happy, stick with it and never give up. I wanted to extend my life as healthy and as long as I could, I figure I’m probably good into my 90s right now,” Alan says with a big smile on his face.
