The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Covers CyberKnife Treatments

by | Dec 31, 2025 | The VA Covers CyberKnife Treatments

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) covers CyberKnife treatments, which is a form of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Coverage is available through both on-site services at select VA hospitals and through the Veteran Community Care program for external facilities.

How to Access Coverage

Coverage for CyberKnife is typically provided in one of two ways:

VA Medical Centers (VAMC): Some major VA hospitals have their own CyberKnife systems. Notable locations include the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston and the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa.

Veteran Community Care Program: If your local VA facility does not offer CyberKnife and you meet eligibility criteria (such as drive time or service availability), the VA can authorize treatment at an in-network private facility. Several private centers, such as Colorado CyberKnife and St. Louis CyberKnife, are officially contracted in-network providers.

Coverage Criteria

Medical Necessity: Like most insurance, the VA covers CyberKnife when it is deemed medically necessary and appropriate for your specific condition (e.g., certain brain tumors, lung, or prostate cancers).

Prior Authorization: Treatment must be approved by your VA health care team before you begin sessions at a community provider.

Eligibility: You generally must be enrolled in VA health care. Under the PACT Act of 2022, the VA has expanded health care and benefits for many veterans with “presumed” service-connected cancers.

Next Steps

Consult Your VA Doctor: Discuss whether CyberKnife is the right treatment option for your diagnosis.

Request a Referral: If your doctor agrees, they can initiate the referral through the VA Community Care Network (CCN) if treatment is not available at your local VAMC.

Confirm Network Status: Ensure the chosen facility is an approved VA Community Care provider to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
