“I’m Here for Another Father’s Day.” CyberKnife for Prostate Cancer Treatment ~ “Prostate cancer diagnosis, it’s not the end gentleman, it’s just the beginning,” said Don Kearns, a father, husband and two-time prostate cancer survivor treated twice by the experts at CyberKnife Center of Miami, the premiere cancer treatment center in South Florida.
When Don first faced prostate cancer 10 years ago, instead of surgery, he opted for non-surgical treatment with CyberKnife, which uses a cutting-edge technology known as stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT to kill prostate tumors with precision — leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed.
“The perspective on life that cancer gave me was certainly changing, life changing. I’m having more fun than ever,” said Don.
He has since celebrated more anniversaries with his wife and had more quality time with family and more Father’s Days.
Unfortunately, after years of living without cancer and without side effects from treatment, the cancer returned.
CyberKnife for Recurrent Prostate Cancer
He’s not alone according to the National Institutes of Health. Regardless of treatment with surgery or radiation, prostate cancer will recur in between one-quarter and one-third of men.
“CyberKnife radiation therapy is an excellent tool to treat recurrent prostate cancer or cancer of any kind,” says Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director of CyberKnife Miami.
And that’s exactly who Don turned to for his second treatment.
“When I was faced with prostate cancer the second time,” Don explains “I called on the CyberKnife Center of Miami again.”
Prostate cancer recurrence is treatable and may even be curable with CyberKnife, and survival rates remains high. At least 94% of patients live at least 15 years after their original diagnoses.
“And CyberKnife after five easy non-invasive treatments, I feel like I scored,” said Don.
Don’s first PSA test post-treatment showed his levels dropped by about half. Don also said treatment didn’t stop him from traveling, exercising or going to football games.
The CyberKnife Advantage
According to Accuray, the maker of CyberKnife, benefits of CyberKnife for prostate cancer treatment include:
Excellent long-term cancer control
Non-surgical
Non-invasive
Fewer treatments over a shorter time frame. (Four to five treatments over one to two weeks.)
Lower incidence of sexual, urinary and bowel function side effects
Patients continue normal activities during treatment
And if the cancer returns, patients can be treated again
Prostate Cancer Statistics
Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will survive. About 60-percent of cases are diagnosed in men older than 65, and it’s more common among older men and non-Hispanic, and African American men.
That’s why Father’s Day is the time to remind dad to get checked. And if you’re a dad, it’s time to take your prostate health seriously so you can be around for many more Father’s Days.
