It’s possible that just one treatment with CyberKnife, a highly targeted form of radiation known as stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT, in just one day could be all a man needs to treat prostate cancer in the future.
You read that correctly – One And Done.
Currently, patients who opt for CyberKnife – one of the most advanced and successful ways to treat prostate cancer — need just five treatments over a 10-day period compared to months of treatment with other forms of radiation.
“CyberKnife is the most effective, safest and quickest way to treat prostate cancer so you can put it behind you and get on with your life,” says Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director of the CyberKnife Center of Miami.
However, that could change as Accuray, the maker of CyberKnife, continues to be a trailblazer in prostate cancer research. Accuray made headlines for the PRO-FAST prostate cancer treatment study, which was presented at the European Society for Radiation and Oncology in Milan. From the fall of 2023 to the fall of 2024, 12 patients were enrolled in the study. The first 12 patients “including high-risk, unfavorable and favorable intermediate risk patients,” Accuray says.
Since no major adverse reactions were seen in these patients, the study continued recruiting patients.
“We have treated 37 of the 70 patients necessary to date and the results are very good.” says Andrei Fodor, Senior radiation oncologist, at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Italy.
Toxicity levels were low in these patients, and the one-year follow-up showed that PDS levels were controlled.
“This treatment greatly benefits patients who have long distances to travel for treatment, allowing them to have treatment in just one day,” Accuray says. And in the future it may be able to benefit many other patients as well.
