Where Does Prostate Cancer Spread?

by | Feb 24, 2023 | CyberKnife For Prostate Cancer, Metastatic Prostate Cancer

It’s a well-known fact that early detection of prostate cancer increases the chance of cure and long-term survival. But generally, there is no cure for metastatic prostate cancer or cancer that spreads outside the prostate. Though it can be managed with proper treatment.

When prostate cancer spreads, it tends to metastasize to the bones in 85-to-90 percent of cases, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The cancer can also spread to the lymph nodes, liver or lungs, according to WebMD.

Treatment goals for metastatic prostate cancer change from curing the cancer to managing symptoms, slowing the growth, and shrinking the tumors.

Managing Metastatic Prostate Cancer

According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, high-risk or locally-advanced prostate cancers are more likely to become metastatic. It can cause symptoms like fatigue, bone pain and difficulty urinating, according to Prostate Cancer UK.

Yet men with advanced disease can outlive their prostate cancers because certain state-of-the-art treatment options can treat the cancer and extend their lives. In this way, metastatic prostate cancer is more like living with a chronic disease such as diabetes or heart disease.

CyberKnife, which uses a form of targeted radiation known as stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT, is one of those options. At the CyberKnife Center of Miami we treat all prostate cancers — from early to metastatic prostate cancers.

“Years of mounting research is proving CyberKnife to be the gold standard for treating prostate cancer, and as more men learn about CyberKnife, it is becoming the number one treatment of choice,” says Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director of CyberKnife Miami.

He adds, “It’s an excellent treatment option for prostate cancer patients– especially patients with metastatic prostate cancer, ones who can’t have surgery, failed other treatments or have been told there’s nothing left to do.”

Here’s why:

  • It’s noninvasive.
  • There are no risks of infection or long periods of downtime like there is with surgery.
  • The CyberKnife radiation beams, which target and destroy the tumor, are exceedingly precise. That means healthy tissue is unharmed.
  • Treatments are outpatient and last about 30 minutes.
  • Side effects are minimal and may include fatigue and nausea.

In fact, at CyberKnife Miami we often treat metastatic cancer with great success and in less time than traditional radiation treatments.

CyberKnife has few side effects. Its pinpoint radiation beams hit only the prostate so we can give a much higher dose with a lot fewer treatments, leaving healthy surrounding tissue unharmed. There’s over 20 years of published studies of support,” says Dr. Pomper.
